European Comenius Projects aim at creating an integrated network of countries and promoting mutual understanding and respect around a common theme.
Poland , co-ordinating partner, Greece, Portugal, Turkey and Italy have joined together on this Comenius Project based on five national heroes, emblematic of each partner nation’s characteristics and prowess in varying fields.
Marie Curie (Poland) and Egas Moniz (Portugal) – Nobel Prize winners in their respective countries – speak to us of scientific discovery and progress. Atatürk (Turkey) gives us a shining example of innovation in his society.
The figure of Roberto Saviano (with magistrates Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone) is representative of the past and continuing fight against organized crime (Italy). Mikis Theodorakis (Greece) represents music in the modern world as a vital means of building bridges towards other cultures.
The commitment each school, student, family and staff member makes to organizing, hosting and participating in such projects is sustained by a strong sense of European identity and belonging.
Another major component of the Comenius philosophy is the strengthening of communication skills in the various European languages (with a particular emphasis on the English language), not only for the success of the project itself but also as an on-going means of enhancing cultural understanding between peoples. Involving students and teachers in a multi-cultural experience provides stimulation and motivation.
Horizons are widened and friendships created and maintained, breaking through national, linguistic and social barriers.
Respect for diversity while at the same time holding dear each precious national heritage is the key to the Comenius experience in the Europe of today and tomorrow.
